Welcome to the Galax Scrapbook, an online collection of early Galax history and current events, all of interest to today’s citizens. The way to start is to click on the "Galax History" link on the left, or the Historical Timeline just below.Also try searching for any name or keyword.
The Galax Scrapbook, with images of yesterday and today, will help create a greater interest in our town and its future. You can view images like the original First National Bank Building, Medal of Honor winner Sgt Charles Morris, Miss America Kylene Barker or the fire at Vaughan Bassett Furniture Company.
We have just copied a large potion of the BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF GALAX ,VA. for the celebration June 13-19, 1976.: The Galax Story, A Town is Born, Industry and Mfg., Government, Schools and Churches, Hospitals, Newspapers, and Some Black History of the Galax Area.with a bit about the Rosenwald-Felts School. The early history includes pictures of early Galax, its businesses ( like R E Jones and Sons), homes ( Like Cherry Hill home of J A Messer SR.), industries ( like Edwards Chair Co), Street Scenes and the first Taxi in Galax which together created a town that by the1950’s was said to have more industry per person than any other place in the country.
Growing out of two locations of the late 1800’s, Old Town and Blair, Galax was created by a group of men intent on creating a manufacturing locale second to none. With the arrival of the railroad in 1903, Galax (known then as Bonaparte) was off to a good start.
There is a place for Galax School groups like the Cheer Leaders , Graduation Classes such as GHS 1928, local events and other things of interest. There are many people, born and raised in Galax, who are living in other communities but still want to stay connected to their town and friends. Later, its possible that we could offer a blog section for each high school class to help them keep in touch.
The purpose of this website is to introduce and or reaquaint you with the history of Galax - its industrial history, the events that shaped our community and the people who built and sustained it. Be sure to view the entire site.

Look around the house for old Scrapbooks and old newspapes, valuable sources for that history about to be lost for ever.
